Elgol3

In this Lithographic print I was trying to capture  my emotions associated with erosion i.e.turmoil,fear,strength,fragility and the environment that I have used as inspiration for
my recent work. I deliberately used a landscape format and believe this has worked well,
as  I can see various scenes within the print. The contrast between loose and controlled mark
making, the tonal range used, gives the print an energy and capture the emotions I associate
with erosion. The print is an abstract impression of Elgol.

Elgol 2

Prefer Elgol 1 ,I believe the central drawing on tissue paper detracts from this
                 piece.

Elgol

This is my response to eroded cliffs at Elgol. My initial idea was to hang simple
drawings of erosion made on tissue paper in front of each other and in front of
of the more solid graphite drawings, enabling  the viewer to look into and walk
through the piece. Unfortunately I discovered that you could not see through
tissue paper, even when using a spot light.  I am happy with the way the work
is displayed but I am giving more thought to how I can enhance the experience
              for a viewer.

Impasse

The Art Box is waiting to go on its travels, the sketch
hangs helplessly on the line and the steps are waiting
to be used. The artist discovers that you cannot see
                                    through hanging tissue paper.

Corner Space

Really pleased with the way I have displayed these drawings, the mounting of the larger work within the corner adds another dimension to the work.

Corner Piece 2

Displaying this work in a corner  gives it greater spacial awareness and to me adds to the three dimensional feel.

Monkey Vada

Know you own Strength

Corner Piece

Looking at past entrants for the Jerwood Drawing prize I noticed
that some work had been displayed round corners, decided to see
how my drawing would look. Overall I think this method of display
enhances my work by giving greater spacial awareness.

Scale up

Displayed the work close together to help me decide
which scale produced the most interesting work.
Decided both scales had their individual merit, the
smaller version having more detail/depth and the larger
version being more impressive due to its size/presence.

Getting Ready

Fragility

Decided to use tissue paper as the support for my
sketches, both to express fragility and to give depth
by multilayering. I like the contrast between the
sharp and blurred images and the overall organic
                               feel of this finished work.

Turmoil

I was trying to create a feeling of turmoil
in this drawing and feel that I have been
partially successful. The areas on the
outer edges feel unstable, but the central
                                       area feels still.

Strength

Although this drawing is representational of the erosion
of cliffs it is moving towards abstract. To me the emotions
associated with erosion are strength, fragility, turmoil and fear.
This is my representation of strength, are the parts supporting
each other or are cracks starting to appear?

Monkey Puzzle

The shapes/patterns give a feeling of energy and
movement in this complex drawing. When I look
the first thing I see is a monkey, with a strong ,
resolute jaw ,holding back the turmoil in the
                                       drawing.

Fear

The use of tone and shapes / patterns in this graphite
drawing have generated an energy and feeling of
movement and change. Some of the images present
take on a sinister feel and make me think of unknown.
This is my response to capturing the fear of erosion.

Uncertainty

I was trying to capture the feelings associated with erosion
in the natural environment, which to me are turmoil, strength,
fragility and fear. In my opinion the limited, selected palette
and application of thick acrylic paint, as per Zebedee
Jones, have enabled the creation of an abstract painting
depicting turmoil and strength. The surface of the painting
gives a feeling of movement and the depth gives a feeling
                                 of uncertainty and the unknown.

Ennui

I used an abstracted image from one of my erosion
drawings as my inspiration for this acrylic
                                                 painting.
I am interested in the work of Zebedee Jones,
particularly his use of thick paint, and was interested
to explore if I could capture the strength and fragility
of nature more successfully using this approach.
Overall ,whilst I think there is turmoil showing in parts
of this image, particularly where I have applied the
paint freely,I believe there is an overall feeling of
                                                control .

Forces

I made this video from footage I took when observing the sea, which has
always fascinated me.Is the continual movement of the sea, gradually eroding
the shore, depositing materials in new environments ,a force of destruction
           or creation?
In the video I am trying to capture change,I have emphasised the
transitory shapes and patterns and retained the natural background sound as
it adds to the feeling of movement, all of which contribute to change.

Erosion 5

Graphite drawing based on obsevation and my own photographs
of an eroded cliff. I love the fact that this drawing is
representational, whilst at the same time having abstract qualities. It
has depth, shows good use of tone and this along with  the
extensive use of shapes and patterns has created an
                                  interesting work.
It is a complex piece and I think it is fair to say "the more you
                                  look the more you see"
I have been looking at the work of Sian Bowen and am
starting to think about the different ways drawings can be
                                  displayed.

Intruder 3

My artwork is based on the Natural Environment
and humanity's coexistence with it. Currently I
am focusing on litter/waste. Intruder 2 and
Intruder 3 illustrate my dilemma:- am I trying
to produce artwork with a moral message
                                                 "litter is bad"   or
a message "litter can be used as a material to
                                                 create something beautiful"
In this piece I hope the viewer sees the crisp
                                                 packet as an intruder.

Intruder 2

Collaged "degraded " crisp packets add another dimension to the graphite drawing. Intend to continue to explore the use of collage in this way.

Intruder 1

Overall do not believe this graphite drawing works. I think the inverted image is more interesting ,but  the rubbish looks inanimate and  too integrated into the honeycomb structure, not the intruder I wanted it to be.

Searching

Trying to decide if I should leave all the white space in this drawing.

Blown

A photograph from the "Blown exhibition " in the Shaun space see http://www.shaunprojectspace.wordpress.com/.

Erosion 4

This is the less successful drawing in my opinion.

Erosion 3

Erosion 2

Using Ink has enabled me to capture a feeling of energy/movement.

Erosion 1

Thoroughly enjoyed creating this graphite drawing which ,to me, shows how this intricate eroded  natural structure can be considered to be fragile or strong.

Surprise

I like the "shadow art" of Cornelia Parker and Tim Noble /Sue Webster as I believe the shadow adds another dimension. I was surprised to create this "landscape" when I took some photographs, in a dark room ,of a suspended piece of acetate to which I had added paper mache and footprints cut out of tin cans.
I am going to do some more experiments to see what other "surprises" I can create.

Power

Trying to see if I could use recycled tin cans as paint by weaving them into the canvas .I consider this to be a successfu exercise and believe the pieces of can add to the overall energy and movement depicted.
