Research

My work is inspired by the Natural Environment .I am interested in the work of a wide range of artists including Richard Long,Robert Smithson,  Andy Goldsworthy,  Ruri, Tomas Saraceno, Cornelia Parker and Mark Coreth. Another person who inspires me is enviromental  artist  John Dahlsen particularly his use of personally collected rubbish as material for his artworks. http://www.johndahlsen.com/
The way Phyllida Barlow  uses building materials to create sculptures interests me,although I recognise that the production of three dimensional objects is not one of my strong points. http://www.oneintheother.com/exhibitions/brake/phyllida-barlow.html   The repositioning of everyday objects as per Arman http://www.armanstudio.com/ would be a more viable proposition for me.
Personally collected rubbish has been the material for some of my artwork and I have explored shadow art based on the work of Tim Noble and Sue Webster. http://timnobleandsuewebster.com/ I am interested in the way a pile of inanimate rubbish can be transformed into a representation of real life and make the absent become present. I admire Cold dark Matter by Cornelia Parker and believe the use of shadow adds another dimension to her work.

In addition I have continued to develop my  interest in making Videos and following a viewing of the work by Douglas Gordan I used video to explore  the conceptual aspect of my work. http://gagosian.com/exhibitions/2011-02-09-douglasgordan I have also been inspired by the work of Pipilotte Rist at the Hayward/Southbank Centre http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/rist and the work by Hilary Llyod which was shortlisted for the Turner Prize. http://www.balticmill.com/turnerprize/

I have looked at the work of Ant Macari Exploring the temporary Nature of Art http://www.aestheticamagazine.com/gfx/20ant.pdf  The basis for the majority of his creative outputs is invariably drawing. I liked the way he drew directly onto the walls of the Baltic and immersed the audience in his work. This is something I am giving thought to when developing ideas for engaging the viewer with my drawings.

I have considered  the work of Leo Fitzmaurice, who inspired me to be more creative with the use of collected rubbish. http://www.northernartprize.org.uk/2011-prize/shortlist/leo-fitzmaurice-1  I particularly like his work with packaging materials, where he reworks/repositions them, enabling the audience to view them in a new and unexpected way. He sees his work as a form of abstraction, not in relation to figuration, but in relation to information. Looking at his work made me realise that I wanted to work with recycled cans because of the text and images on their surface and the energy retained within the material when it is cut.

I have recently been looking at the work of Sian Bowen. I find  her approach to drawing  exciting particularly the way she displays her work and how she uses light . http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/people-pages/sian-bowen-artist-in-residence-in-drawing/
I also find the work of Zebedee Jones interesting , his use of thick paint appeals to me and I have tried some of his techniques. http://www.agnewsgallery.com/exhibition/zebedee-jones-recentpaintings-exhibition/
My aim is to produce work which is aesthtically pleasing ,which at the same time stimulates the mind.
